At every step of the way Trump has done Netanyahu’s bidding on Iran.
This was started by hubris
During his first term, driven by no small amount of hubris and a little racism Trump tore up Obama’s agreement with Iran. While the agreement had it’s limitations it did slow the production of the bomb, bolster the position of Iranian moderates, and mandate inspections with the support of others. Netanyahu hated it though, so Trump killed it but swore he would get a better deal.
He didn’t.
Nuclear negotiations, even more so than trade wars, are not easy. And any progress Trump might have made in that direction was shot when he decided to kill off a popular Iranian general. While he may have believed it made him look tough, it also made any negotiation with Iran that much harder. Who, after all, would choose to negotiate with someone who bombs them?
This has brought destruction
For a brief time just last month it seemed like Trump might negotiate with Iran. Then Israel began bombing them demanding regime change. Trump responded by demanding that Iran negotiate with us but their own negotiation team was dead.
Now Trump has brought us into the war.
The US has bombed Iran, and in so doing we have confirmed every piece of propaganda the Allatoyah tells about us. He says we serve Israel, that we want to bomb Iran flat, and that we will accept no peace, only destruction. From this perspective he is right.
This will end in failure
Trump says that he wants peace, but you can’t bring peace by bombing people to the ground, nor can you make them like you. While he says he wants Iran to negotiate it is clear he will only accept surrender. And it is also clear that whatever he says, does not matter. Israel is calling the shots and Trump has no will to reign them in.
Trump wants regime change in Iran but the one thing that strengthens a dictators hand is a state of war. This is why the Obama deal was so good, it gave space to the moderates. Now their capital is being bombed and the Allatoyah is firing back. Whatever they think of him they will never trust us.
Trump also wants to reduce Iran’s nuclear ambitions but now those will be stronger than ever before. Iran knows that negotiations won’t work and they know that only nukes will truly keep them safe. They, and indeed everyone, will be rushing to get the bomb by any means necessary.
Trump also thinks this will be easy. Bush thought so too.
Trump likely thinks this will help him, and to an extent he may be right. The Christian Conservatives rallied to him after he gave them their white whale by ending Roe. Now he is giving the neocons their dream war. But neither group speaks for most Americans and indeed the neocons speak for the fewest of all. In the end this will cost him support even if it extends his power.
And there is the one area where Trump will probably win. He wants to expand his power. He stages fake emergencies and screams about foreign hordes. What will he do with an actual war?
Whatever he does we can be certain that the Democrats cannot or will not stop him. After all, their leaders are neocons too.
