Richard Nixon liked the movie Patton. His particular obsession was the part where Patton says “America loves a winner, it will not tolerate a loser”.
Believe it or not, Nixon was actually elected as the peace candidate on his promise to end the war in Vietnam. He chose to bomb Cambodia because he believed, in line with Patton, that only expanding the war could bring an honorable victory. Only by appearing unhinged (“Fucking Nuts” even), or by appearing “strong” could he bring peace that Americans would accept. He had to win (see here and here).
This attitude may have influenced his decision to use CIA assets to spy on his political opponents on the belief that it would be “Bad for America if the president were to lose an election.”
