I don’t particularly like squirrels, nor do I hate them (except when they get into my attic). But, it seems that they matter, or rather one of them matters a lot to a lot of people.
But why?
Why is one squirrel that was euthanized in one town such a national thing? The people who seized the squirrel were county agents enforcing state laws. They were not the FBI, not the CIA, not the EPA, not the “Deep State”. They were just some local people doing a local thing that is now all over Youtube.
It is all over because for some people it proves that all of their enemies are “just evil stormtroopers who hate innocent critters” or for others because it proves that their enemies are idiots.
But it does not matter.
The squirrel may be a viral star (and may have had a virus) but the reality is that the legal powers that went after him are a local thing and are empowered, and can be disempowered, by local policies. Just as one teacher saying one thing about Columbus somewhere is not a national thing neither is the rumor that schools are encouraging kids to identify as rodents, or the real one.
If you hate what happened to peanuts then move Pine City NY and vote in NY elections to change state environmental laws and encourage the spread of rabies. But if you think that has anything to do with the presidential election then you are a sucker and are being led to get outraged about a thing that has nothing whatsoever to do with you.
