Donald Trump mused idly about overturning the election and the smart people assured us we wasn’t serious. But when faced with a loss, and in weakness, he did.
He claimed that he deserved total immunity from the law and the power to kill his opponents. They assured us that was insane but the deep thinkers on the court said “ok” and shredded the rule of law.
Yes Trump wants to appear crazy. It gives him discourse power, lets him seize our attention, and focus it where he likes. It also winds up his followers while he picks their pockets and forces the opportunists and placeholders in the party to say again “yes sir how high?” and to excuse more of the inexcusable.
But, every time he does this his true believers listen. He normalizes just a little bit more of his awful ideas. They take him seriously, set their expectations, and prepare themselves for him act, sooner or later he has to.
Sooner or later crazy people do crazy things. And weak people who troll themselves into a corner act out in the worst ways.
We are long past time when anyone can or should tell us “he isn’t serious” or that we should believe when push comes to shove the supplicants and gelded placeholders in his administration the House, Senate, and Judiciary will find a spine.
Whether he is serious or not these are very dangerous times.
