Canada and Mexico didn’t ’give in’. Both committed to do what they had already been doing. Mexico already had 15,000 troops at the border and Canada just reiterated that it would maintain the agreement on border security it had committed to last December. Trump needed a way out that would look like a win. Especially since he was getting pressure from business organizations and even the Murdoch run Wall Street Journal had headlines stating that the trade war was a really dumb idea.
It does not matter whether this represents new spending or just doing things Trudeau already planned. What matters is that Trump got to stage a show where he beat a white liberal and a mexican woman into submission and come away looking “respected”. 30 days from now he will be back, demanding more, and with this first show of polite submission, Trudeau has ensured that more extreme demands will follow.
Getting the chance to look strong is something. It is exactly the drug Trump needs most, and it is exactly what will motivate him to come back demanding more. I would hope we would learn something but then I see all the people who made excuses for him for the past 8 years doing the same thing and I doubt it.
The world didn't reelect him, so it doesn't matter whether they know it or not.
77 million assholes reelected him, and thanks to Justin Chamberlain Trudeau, they are now more in illusion that he's a tough guy. This is all he wanted from this shitshow. He doesn't care for what the rest of the world is thinking about him. He will come back with more demands after 30 days. Just wait and see.
He now wants Gaza, too. This is one of the first symptoms of the grave mistake that Trudeau made. He will demand more and more and more, and who's gonna stop him?!
My concern is that every time someone strokes his ego or says, as one Republican US Senator did “what’s the harm in humoring him for a while"?” he only returns for more. He’s a bully. Validation is what he wants, and knowing he can get validation in exchange for only a 30 day reprieve means that he will keep doing this month after month after month. It also means he can keep up with his loud bluster on things like Canada becoming a territory, to distract from what Musk is doing in the US, and from chipping away at other parts of Canada’s independence like their financial system or food regulations.
So, let me get this right. Canada lined up retaliatory tariffs (that Trump said would lead to increased tariffs from him) and a bunch of other measures. Went on TV speaking to him and Americans generally and said “we will NOT give in”, in the end did not give in but somehow this is polite submission. One has to respect the reality that the childish evil-doer has the biggest economy and military arsenal under his control. Given that fact, I think that Trudeau put on a master class… and Trump looks the fool that he is. Of course, his peeps will never see it but they do not see reality. We can’t change that.
So yes, they did line up the retaliation I agree. But, when push came to shove they also made nice, said nice things, and pretended that Trump won something rather than publicly saying “we gave nothing but what we were already doing.” They humored him and let him save face and in so doing they actually encouraged more bullying.
As a consequence Trump knows that any time he wants to save face or get a distraction he can come back and demand more. This is an established pattern for Trump he chips away at things with demand after demand after demand. People play nice, and though he does not get his big demands he does get a lot of smaller ones.
If Canada and Mexico want to stop this they need to line up the tariffs yes, but they also need to stop giving him face. All it does is encourage him to return.
My first reaction after hearing this news was exactly like you. Trudeau is another Neville Chamberlain who can't stay firm against bullies like dump trump.
EXACTLY!!! GAH!

Again Mahdi.... The Orangutan got nothing. He can make all the demands he wants. The world knows his act. Maybe even the Yankees can learn something.

You really do need to see an analyst about that Trudeaumania Syndrome.....
Trump got played. He can look good on Fox but he actually got nothing. Canada and Mexico stroked his fragile ego and allowed him to claim victory.
